Valley Primary School

Physical Education

Our PE Intent
At our school, we believe that PE is about more than learning to play sport. It is about developing confident, active and resilient children who understand the importance of looking after their physical and mental wellbeing.
We want every child to enjoy being active, discover activities they love and develop the skills, confidence and positive attitudes they need to lead healthy, active lives.

Our PE and Core Values

Our PE curriculum reflects our school values in everything we do:

Aim High
We encourage children to challenge themselves, try their best and celebrate their progress. We teach children that effort, perseverance and improvement are just as important as achievement.

Learn Together
Children learn to communicate, cooperate and work as part of a team. They learn from one another, celebrate success and support each other when things don't go to plan.

Care
We teach children to care for their bodies, make healthy choices and look after the spaces and equipment they use. We encourage kindness and positive encouragement in every lesson.

Be Honest
We promote fair play, respect and honesty. Children learn to follow rules, play fairly and show respect to teammates, opponents and adults.

Look After One Another
We want every child to feel included, safe and valued. Children learn to encourage others, celebrate different strengths and make sure everyone has the opportunity to participate.

What does this look like at our school?

Through our PE curriculum, children have opportunities to:

  • Develop fundamental movement skills and physical confidence.

  • Experience a wide range of sports and physical activities.

  • Work collaboratively and develop teamwork skills.

  • Build resilience, perseverance and self-belief.

  • Understand how exercise and healthy choices support wellbeing.

  • Take part in competitive and non-competitive activities.

  • Develop leadership, communication and decision-making skills.

  • Demonstrate respect, fairness and good sportsmanship.

  • Celebrate their own achievements and those of others.

  • Discover activities they enjoy and develop a lifelong love of being active.

Our aim is for every child to leave our school feeling confident, capable and positive about being active — ready to look after themselves and others and to enjoy an active, healthy life.
